About the city of London
London, the capital of England and the United Kingdom, is one of
the world's leading business, financial and cultural centres and
the largest city in Europe with a population of nearly eight
million.
London is a major tourist destination, with four world heritage
sites and numerous world-famous landmarks and attractions such as
the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, Covent Garden, the Tower of
London, Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, Buckingham Palace
and the London Eye, along with important cultural institutions such
as the British Museum and the National Gallery.
The shopping and entertainment heart of London is the "West End"
- a large and lively area which encompasses Oxford Street,
Piccadilly Circus, Soho and Leicester Square. London is also a
major international transport hub - Heathrow, the main London
airport, carries more international passengers than any other
airport in the world.
